Most successful managers in European club football history

Among them is Valeriy Lobanovskyi

While there is still a forced pause in the European season, we can look at the past and discover some interesting facts. In particular, we will try to identify the most titled coaches of the continent.

Of course, here one can take into account various criteria and ours are below. As a result, we have a table of 98 specialists with one Ukrainian among them — Valeriy Lobanovskyi. He takes the third place and shares it with the Portuguese Jose Mourinho.

Please note that in the table there are three more specialists who worked with Ukrainian clubs — Mircea Lucescu and Nevio Skala (both Shakhtar), as well as the Juande Ramos (FC Dnipro).

Primary criteria for a manager to appear in the list:

 winning one of the 3 major UEFA tournaments:

 — European Cup/Champions League

 — Cup Winners' Cup

 — UEFA Cup/Europa League

Trophies counted:

 — one of the 3 major UEFA tournaments

 — national top-10 championship

 — national top-10 Cup (no league cups)

What does top-10 mean:

 — trophy of a nation ranked top-10 in the ranking at the conclusion of the season/calendar year

 — the ranking are:

  1. a) World Football Elo Rating (European countries only): before 1955, England during 5-year ban
  2. b) UEFA 1-year coefficient: 1955/56—1959/60
  3. c) UEFA 5-year coefficient: 1960/61 onwards
